Hello everyone, my name is Brett Skyllingstad. I, like many others, stumbled into the sport of Triathlon from a desire to lose weight. Believe it or not, back in 2006 I used to weigh 253lbs and have a 41” waistline. I now weigh 180lbs and have a 31” waistline. I did all of this thru running, triathlons, and most of all, a lifestyle change. I was a great football player in high school, routinely did strength training and year-round off-season conditioning. This kept me in great shape and also kept the weight off. After leaving high school, I went to college where my eating habits went south. I also was very inclined to drink beer as often as possible. While in college I saw my weight balloon to 253lbs.
One day I decided enough was enough and started my lifestyle change. I started small and followed the simple principle of eating healthy and exercising daily. I headed to the treadmill and did a run/walk routine for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Soon this daily exercise turned into my addiction with running. I also started eating healthy and taught myself portion control. Well I am here to say that after some 3 years I have kept the weight off and have found a new passion in life.
Thru running, I found triathlons. The rest you could say is history. Since starting in the sport of triathlons and running I have raced numerous half marathons, 3 marathons, numerous sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, 5 Half Ironman’s, and 1 Ironman. I have even won my age group at a few local sprint distance races. I have made vast improvements in the past 2 years since my first race. For example, in my first half marathon in 2006 my time was 2:01, one year later I ran a 1:33. That is a 28 minute improvement. My first Olympic distance triathlon I raced a 2:55, roughly one year later I raced a 2:23. That’s 32 minutes of improvement. My first half Ironman distance race, I ran a 5:18, one year later on the same course I ran a 4:59, that’s 19 minutes of improvement in one year. I recently just completed my first Ironman in 12:28. I hope that in a year I can also see some significant improvement on that time as well.
I am here to say that I have learned everything I know from reading triathlon literature, from Coach Todd, and from my own experience while training for all of these events. I learned many things the hard way (during races) and have lots of horror stories to tell. I have placed in the top 20 in my age group at all of the Half Ironman’s I have completed. I am by no means the most experienced but I am here to say I know what it takes to set a goal and succeed.
My background is in Engineering and I firmly believe in approaching training for marathons or triathlons with a scientific approach. This involves the use of Heart Rate, Power Zones, and utilizing metabolic testing offered by Texas Triple Threat. I have been able to achieve all of my goals because of these scientific ways of training and it hasn’t failed me yet. If you would be interested in working with me for an event or just want to chat about opportunities, please email me and we can get together to discuss your potential to succeed.
